you win some, you lose some

I signed up for the Como half marathon last month right after the Brenta one because these things, they are like drugs. They leave me kind of tired, but totally high. I was only going to do the Verona one, but that led to Brenta. So I figured I’d do the Brenta one just so I’d have two under my belt before the summer, but that led to Como, which was going to be the last one of the spring season since it will soon be too hot for me to do these things comfortably, but Como was the best one yet, and now I’m tempted to see if I can fit one in in June, although after Como, it might be disappointing. The route we took yesterday was breathtaking. We started out by the stadium just on Lake Como, ran through the gardens of Villa Olmi, also overlooking the lake, then ran through little winding (hilly!!) village roads to Cernobbio and back. I haven’t trained for hills and they were rough, but I still managed to finish in my target time of 1.38 and was thrilled.

But then back to real life: when we returned home after a two-hour drive, the boys asked me to sew them superhero capes – with their “help” – and, ever the sucker for a sewing project, I obliged. Seven’s is still not complete and the “collaborative” project sucked up whatever energy or patience I had left. By evening, the exhaustion had gotten the better of me. The boys were sent off to sleep with some shouting and without their bedtime story, which I promptly felt awful about. And today Three is home with pink eye and tomorrow I have a huge deadline that I must work like mad to meet. Also, the server for my work email account has been down since Friday and my service provider is no longer even answering the phone.

But I did manage to get my act together early this morning and prepare the 50 squares of Tulle that Three’s preschool teacher requested for the end-of-the-year school play and also provide Seven with a nutritious packed lunch for his field trip today that he deemed acceptable.

And! I spoke to the carpenter again this morning and he has promised he will install my kitchen shelves on Thursday. (Hope springs eternal.)
